New Sagaya Midtown Market

Located at 3700 Old Seward Hwy, New Sagaya Midtown Market is an Anchorage institution that masterfully bridges the gap between a high-end gourmet grocer and a traditional Asian marketplace. For over 50 years, it has served as the "culinary crossroads" of Alaska, where you can buy world-class Alaskan King Crab and artisan European bread under the same roof as imported Japanese sweets and fresh Thai basil.

The Midtown Highlights

The "L’Aroma" Experience: Tucked inside is L’Aroma Bakery & Deli, widely considered to have some of the best sandwiches in the state. From their signature roast beef on house-baked bread to Mediterranean-style dips, it’s a premier lunch destination. Pair your meal with a coffee from the in-store Kaladi Brothers Coffee stand for the ultimate local power lunch.

The "World-Class" Seafood Counter: Known globally as one of the best places to source Alaskan seafood, this department is a marvel. They don't just sell King Crab, Halibut, and Salmon; they offer a custom vacuum-sealing and shipping service, allowing travelers to send a taste of Alaska directly to their doorstep anywhere in the Lower 48.

Asian Soul Food Hot Bar: The market features a bustling food court with a rotating "steam table" menu of Asian comfort classics. The Garlic Chicken, Chicken Adobo, and Spicy Beef are local legends—you can grab a two-entrée combo that is famously large enough for two people to share.

The "Pho-Ready" Produce: This is the primary destination in Anchorage for home chefs making traditional Pho or stir-fry. It is one of the few places in the city to consistently find Vietnamese cilantro (Rau Ram), fresh galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and oxtails.

Specialized "Poke" Bar: Their fresh-made poke bowls and smoked salmon spread are cult favorites. The spicy ahi tuna and ceviche are prepared daily, offering a fresh, Pacific-rim flavor profile that is rare for the sub-arctic.

Why It’s Unique

New Sagaya Midtown is defined by its "Employee-Owned Excellence." Since 2011, this market has been 100% employee-owned, which translates into a level of knowledgeable, invested service rarely seen in corporate grocery chains. It is uniquely multi-cultural; it isn't just an "Asian market"—it’s a global bazaar. It’s the only place in town where you can find Aloha Shoyu from Hawaii, Mogu Mogu drinks from Thailand, and USDA Choice Harris Ranch beef all in a single, well-organized trip.

Insider Tip: If you're visiting for the seafood, the department uses a number system during peak hours—grab your ticket immediately upon entering. Also, look for the "decorated sugar cookies" in the bakery; they are a local favorite for gifts and are almost too beautiful to eat.

Two small watermelons for $42 and one pineapple for $18? That’s ridiculous. When I got home the watermelon was bad. Not happy. I’ve also felt uncomfortable numerous times at the fish counter (when they were willing to take my order) because I felt like I was shopping while being the wrong ethnicity. I’m going to start looking for plan B.

Grocery section is great, but the Asian food counter has been steadily declining over the last few years. I used to love their spicy beef and I ordered a pint of it today and it was unrecognizable in appearance and flavor. Paid $9 for mostly a box of onions and C grade beef. It used to be filled with broccoli and beef and it is completely different now and even taking that into account, the quality is really lacking.

One of the biggest markets for Asian import products. The produce here seems to be cheaper than in other places so I tend to shop here. They have a variety of cookware, and imported toiletries like shampoo, and medicine. They have a wide range of pasta shapes imported and locally made.

This is certainly the best Asian grocery store in Alaska, it has many ingredients (that when my wife and I make the trip into Anchorage) We pretty much always add to our list of stops. It's simply has so much for making different Asian and ethnic foods that nobody has come close to replacing it. I really like their live seafood and The sheer variety of everything from curry pastes to bagged rices. In fact they have so much excellent quality rice, I don't think I knew a good rice was until they introduced me to the 2026 new crop three ladies rice haha changed my life. I wish they had a bit more of a variety of exotic fruits and vegetables, but they have a very good stock of what you would need to make pretty much every Asian, Thai, and even most Indian dishes. I will say that they Do not have the best meat department outside of seafood but that's really one of the only areas that's lacking. The fresh bread and pastries are wonderful and they have things from generic staples all the way to fancier items. Honestly even if you don't buy anything sometimes it's just fun to walk around and look at all the fun snacks and things, and I can say that that has a lasting effect as I've enjoyed coming here since I was a kid and teenager.

If you can't find it at your usual big chain grocers you can most likely find it here. Or at the very least the folks here can usually tell where you *can* find it.

I love New Sagaya! Their Chinese food during lunch is top notch and they don't skimp on their portion sizes!

Plus, ready made sandwiches, calzones, and other items are always delicious as well!

Great fresh, locally-sourced and also internationally sourced, fish are all labeled accordingly. Great prices on produce, lovely little bakery.

This used to be a great place, but sadly, it's gone downhill. The bakery closes at random hours, the staff is rude, and they pick and choose what they make on a daily basis even when they're on the permanent menu. I tried to get a pizza for a couple of days in a row, but they either closed early or told me, 'they weren't making them today' while having an attitude. I will never go back.
