The New Central Market

Located at 555 W Northern Lights Blvd #100, The New Central Market is a vibrant, multi-cultural beacon in the heart of Midtown Anchorage. While Alaska's extreme geography can make sourcing fresh international ingredients a challenge, this market—owned by the husband-and-wife team of Hyun "Sonya" Yoo and Joe Clark—has functioned as a culinary lifeline for over a decade. It is a dense, high-energy hub where the flavors of South Korea, Thailand, India, and the Philippines converge under one roof.

The Northern Lights Highlights

The "Banchan" Gallery: The soul of the store is its refrigerated case of house-made Korean banchan. Prepared fresh on-premises, you’ll find everything from fiery Katchi (radish kimchi) and seasoned sprouts to glazed black beans and spicy squid. It is widely considered the best ready-to-eat selection in the city.

The "K-Drama" Pantry: Owner Joe Clark famously tracks trends in Korean and Japanese soap operas and Bollywood films. When a specific snack or drink appears in a popular show, the market works to stock it immediately, making it the local headquarters for "product-placement" treats like specialized Pocky, Kit Kat flavors, and trendy ramen.

Specialized Frozen Meats: This is the primary destination for DIY Korean BBQ in Anchorage. They offer expertly thinly-sliced bulgogi beef and marinated galbi (short ribs), specifically cut to the thinness required for authentic stovetop or tabletop grilling—a service often unavailable at standard Alaskan grocers.

The Indian Spice & Lentil Aisle: Unexpected for a primarily East Asian market, The New Central Market boasts an impressive and affordable selection of Indian spices and dals. From bulk turmeric and cardamom to specialty pickles and gluten-free lentil flours, it serves a broad range of South Asian culinary needs.

Hidden "Hotteok" Treats: If you’re lucky, you might catch the scent of Hotteok (sweet Korean pancakes filled with cinnamon and honey) being made. These warm, "oozy" street snacks are a legendary local comfort food, especially during the long Alaskan winters.

Why It’s Unique

The New Central Market is defined by its "Radical Diversity." It is uniquely pan-Asian; while many markets focus on a single country, this store explicitly aims to let ethnic families cook traditional meals from multiple cultures every day of the week. It’s a place where you can find banana blossoms and imitation vegan duck (seitan) in the same aisle as kaffir lime leaves and Perilla leaves. It captures the "small-town" warmth of Anchorage, where the staff—often including Sonya or Joe themselves—will help you navigate the freezer section to find the "hidden" curry leaves or suggest the perfect tea for your palate.

Insider Tip: The aisles are famously narrow and can get "cozy" during the weekend rush—if you prefer a peaceful treasure hunt, try visiting on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Also, if you are looking for rare vegan ingredients, head to the back freezer wall; they carry a surprising number of plant-based staples that are hard to find elsewhere in the 49th state.

Fun place to stop and shop after bibimbap (served in a hot stone bowl that crisps the rice at the bottom and keeps the food warm throughout the meal) at VIP Restaurant or the buffet at Bombay Central, both next door.

The mak kimchi is THE BEST (don’t buy that stuff in glass jars at the supermarkets) and they know it, as they charge $10 for a small container (19 oz). It’s the only place to get supplies for Indian cooking (and a good selection of frozen meals…and you won’t believe it…fresh curry leaves!!!)

Love that they have all the korean stuff I need. Could work on being nicer to all the non-koreans though. I feel intimidated every time I go in (I’m also asian btw)
