Lucky Market

Located at 5011 Arctic Blvd C, Lucky Market is a true "hidden gem" in Anchorage. While it may look like a modest storefront in a quiet strip mall, it is an Anchorage institution—a vibrant, family-run Asian supermarket that has served the community since 2007. Owned by Barry Yu, a native of Hong Kong, this market is a love letter to the flavors of Southeast Asia, specifically catering to the Filipino, Vietnamese, and Thai communities in the far north.

The Arctic Blvd Highlights

The "Sumo-Sized" Deli: Tucked in the back-left corner is a deli that is legendary among locals. For about $16, the staff will "pile high" a plate with two meats and rice or noodles. The portions are so generous they are famously known to feed a person for 2–3 meals.

The Crispy Pork Belly: The undisputed star of the deli is the deep-fried pork belly (Lechon Kawali style). It is prized for its shatteringly crisp skin and succulent meat. Pair it with their Adobo pork or Sesame Chicken for the ultimate comfort meal.

Seafood from Another World: Lucky Market is one of the few places in Alaska where you can find whole octopus and a dizzying variety of exotic frozen fish. The selection includes everything from Golden Pompano and Rabbit Fish to specialized dried fish like galunggong and bisugo.

The Fresh Herb Vault: In a state where fresh produce can be a challenge, Lucky Market excels. It is the go-to destination for fresh rice noodles (rarely found elsewhere in Alaska), quail eggs, and a deep selection of Southeast Asian herbs like Thai basil and fresh lemongrass.

The "Li Hing" Adventure: The aisles are packed with nostalgic treats. If you’re feeling brave, look for the dried salted plums coated in li hing mui powder—a sweet, sour, and salty Hawaiian favorite that is an "acquired taste" challenge for newcomers.

Why It’s Unique

Lucky Market is defined by its "Alaskan Resourcefulness." Owner Barry Yu works with over 25 different wholesalers outside of Alaska to keep prices low and variety high—a massive logistical feat in the sub-arctic. It is uniquely immersive; unlike larger, modernized markets, Lucky retains the "quaint and cluttered" feel of a traditional neighborhood market in Southeast Asia. It’s a place where the staff is incredibly helpful, the aisles are a maze of discovery, and the food is cooked with a "grandma’s kitchen" level of heart.

Insider Tip: Parking in the Arctic and International strip mall can be very tight, especially during the lunch rush. If you're coming for the deli, try to arrive by 11:30 AM. Also, take your food to go and drive five minutes to the Lake Hood Seaplane Base—there’s nothing quite like eating a massive plate of pork belly while watching floatplanes take off against the mountains.

They sell wonderful array of international goods and food. The place I go to wind down my afternoon and get groceries.
10/10 if I could because they also have a restaurant deal in the back where they serve Halo Halo and a variety of oriental meals.

Cheap, affordable veggies, and all sorts of cut meat and organs! Great selection of East, south, and mainly Southeast Asian goods and spices.

I don’t normally like doing reviews but my experience today really ticked me off. The older lady that was cashiering has horrible customer service. All I wanted to do after work was get in and out and go home. No one was in line and I put my things on the register, I put the basket away and was ready for her to start scanning my items so I can pay for it. She comes across someone she knows, skips me and had the audacity to scan and check out someone else’s items BEFORE me when I was there first along with just standing there and talking like I as the customer was not there. I shop here often because there’s things I need but please train your employees to be better .
