If you’re wandering through the heart of Lincoln Park, you’ll find a slice of old-school Chicago charm at Big Apple Finer Foods. Located at 2345 N Clark St, this independent grocery store has been a neighborhood fixture since 1984, standing its ground as the area has transformed around it. In 2026, it remains a beloved "relic" for locals who prefer the character of a family-run market over the sterile aisles of massive national chains. It is the kind of place where the staff might know your name, and the shelves are packed with a surprising mix of everyday staples and hard-to-find gourmet treats.

The true heart of the store is tucked away in the back: the butcher counter. Often called one of the city’s best-kept secrets, the butcher shop at Big Apple is famous for its USDA Prime meats and in-house dry-aging process, which you can actually see in progress as you approach the counter. Their house-made bratwursts have earned a legendary reputation across Chicago, offering a juicier, coarser grind that puts generic supermarket sausages to shame. Whether you are looking for a restaurant-quality ribeye for a weekend dinner or just a pound of their signature sausages, the level of expertise and personal service here is something you won't find at a big-box store.

Beyond the meat counter, Big Apple functions as a complete neighborhood resource, offering everything from fresh seafood and vibrant produce to an impressive selection of over 16 varieties of freshly baked bagels. For those on the move in 2026, their drive-thru window has become a local lifesaver, allowing you to grab a fresh breakfast sandwich or a coffee without ever leaving your car—a rare convenience on the busy streets of Clark and Fullerton. It’s this blend of high-end quality and practical, neighborhood-focused service that has kept the store running for over four decades.

Visiting Big Apple Finer Foods is more than just a grocery run; it’s a way to support a local institution that has survived through generations of change. While the prices reflect the premium quality of their specialty goods, the convenience and the unmatched quality of the butcher shop make it a "pilgrimage" site for foodies and a daily reliable for those living in the nearby high-rises. It is a sophisticated, approachable gateway to the best flavors of the city, proving that even in a digital age, a classic, full-service grocery store is still the soul of a great neighborhood.

Since I live within walking distance, this used to be my go-to place when I was in a pinch. Need a lemon? Big Apple to the rescue. Forgot an avocado? Big Apple is there. Yesterday, given the below freezing temps, of course my daughter reminded me that we were out of popsicles. Big Apple to the rescue? Not this time. There is an unhoused gentleman who sits outside of the neighboring Thai restaurant. I see him from time-to-time when I stop in the store and we always exchange a few words. He is pleasant and has never outwardly asked for anything. My 8-year-old and I have a lot of age-appropriate discussions, given the work that I do professionally, around housing instability and how we need to work to make systemic change to address the issue. She is very passionate about social justice and we openly acknowledge that giving money to individuals isn't the remedy. However, she was worried and wanted to give some of our change to him after buying the popsicles. I asked the cashier for change since I overspent and needed to use my credit card instead of the cash I brought. When she found out that we were going to give this gentleman a few dollars with the change, she refused to open her drawer and said that she'd "advise against it." When I told her that my daughter wanted to give him a couple of dollars she again refused saying that "he'll never leave." The disdain in her voice was palpable and I was shocked by the frank lack of humanity, especially as she glared at my daughter and I as if we were committing a crime. Unfortunately, she just cost Big Apple my business. I'd rather get in my car and drive to Jewel or Mariano's and be inconvenienced by traffic than spend my hard-earned dollars in a store that can't show decency toward a human being. I don't know if there's a backstory here, however, imagine what this world would be like if we could show each other a little grace instead of 'othering?' Frankly, I'm ecstatic to no longer shell out $8 for popsicle emergencies.

Great local grocery store, has nearly everything that is needed and normally very well stocked and the goods are checked for freshness. They also have a great butcher shop in the back which has tons of options.

The staff are great and very helpful. Highly recommend to locals or those in the area.

Yes, the prices are a bit higher than a big chain but it’s supporting a small business. In the end to me it’s worth the time saved from driving, parking, and walking around a massive stores. I can be in and out in 5-10 min!
