In a city where therapy can sometimes feel like a "one-size-fits-all" clinical model, Health For Life Counseling at 781 Kenmoor Ave SE (Suite C) stands as a beacon of specialized, integrative healing. This is the home of the Trauma-Informed Counseling Center of Grand Rapids, a practice that rejects the "label-first" approach in favor of understanding the deep-rooted physiological and psychological fingerprints of your life story.

Under the direction of Paul Krauss, this isn't just a counseling office—it's a multi-faceted wellness hub where the goal isn't to be a "patient for life," but to gain the health needed for a lifetime.

The Health For Life "Edge"

The Trauma-Informed Vanguard: They are the local authorities on how trauma physically settles in the body. Beyond standard talk therapy, they utilize a "Wellness Stack" of advanced modalities like EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and Trauma-Informed Yoga to help your nervous system recalibrate.

The "Anti-Medical Model" Philosophy: They don't believe in "fixing" you because they don't believe you are broken. Their clinicians view clients as partners, focusing on collaborative healing that honors your cultural, spiritual, and personal identity without judgment.

The Specialist Synergy: Their team includes a diverse range of experts, from Art Therapists helping you process the "un-sayable" to specialists in Religious Deconstruction, First Responder trauma, and performance-based EMDR for athletes.

Radical Inclusivity: From being paneled with Medicaid and Medicare to their explicit commitment to LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent-affirming care, they have intentionally designed their practice to be accessible to the entire Grand Rapids community, not just a select few.

The Kenmoor Experience

Located in the quiet, professional corridor of Cascade/Grand Rapids, Suite C is designed as a "safe container." It’s an environment that feels private and grounded, far removed from the sterile, fluorescent atmosphere of a hospital. It is a space where the armor can finally come off.

The Philosophy: "We don't want you in therapy forever. We want to give you the insights and tools to navigate the world with a regulated nervous system and a renewed sense of joy."

The front desk people are always away from the phone or just completely gone so there's no way to get help. I've called so many times it never goes through and when I'm in office there's a sign saying they're on holiday leave when its well after the holidays. Also this place claims heavily that they are trauma based/informed and specialize in trauma based care. However, my therapist did not seem experienced at all. In my screening call I explicitly said that I did not need talk therapy, I was very aware of my emotions and trauma focused work/nervous system regulation is what I need, which they confirmed they were capable of handling. They then proceeded for multiple sessions do client-led talk therapy. They kept asking how I was feeling and what I thought about everything when I thought that was very clear from the start. Didn't have very organized sessions with clear plans, sessions were based on my feelings that day or current events, and never closed my sessions on a good note to make sure I left feeling safe or stable after opening up. Couldn't call a receptionist to switch therapists within the practice because they rarely answer the phone and as someone with trauma it didn't feel safe to confront my therapist directly and tell them I needed to see someone else because they weren't what I needed. I go to therapy to receive help and not guide my therapist on how to provide a service to me. Really disappointed that I have to start over again. This might be more helpful for people who need base level help, just being diagnosed with depression/anxiety and can't identify their emotions and need grounding/coping/reflection techniques. This was not helpful for complex trauma and individuals who are very aware. However, the people I did speak to were nice people outside of the whole therapy thing.

I've been doing virtual therapy with Kay for 5 years. We're currently doing EMDR therapy for a phobia I have. She has helped me SO much over the years through my divorce, break ups, family issues, sex help, and now digging into my trauma. I wish I could prescribe Kay to everyone I know because a therapy session with her is the best money I spend each week. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Health for Life Counseling :)
