If you’re a pet owner on the West Side, specifically around the Lakes or Spring Valley, you probably already have Veterinary Emergency + Critical Care (VE+CC) bookmarked. Located at 8650 W Tropicana Ave #104, right at the busy corner of Tropicana and Durango, it’s the place everyone talks about when their regular vet is closed and things take a turn for the worse. It’s tucked into the same complex as the Specialty Center, so it’s basically the "big guns" of animal medicine in our part of town.

The best thing about this place is that they are open 24/7, 365 days a year. Whether it’s 3:00 AM on a Tuesday or the middle of Thanksgiving dinner, their doors are open. You don’t need an appointment or a referral to walk in, which is a massive relief when your dog eats something they shouldn't or your cat is suddenly struggling to breathe. They are built for the heavy-duty stuff—think surgeries, blood transfusions, and even an on-site blood bank.

What really sets them apart is that they have board-certified specialists right there. While some ERs just have a general vet on staff, VE+CC has experts in critical care who handle the most complicated cases in Southern Nevada. They have high-end gear like MRI and CT scans on-site, so you aren't being bounced around from clinic to clinic trying to figure out what’s wrong. It’s also one of the few places in Vegas that is truly equipped to handle emergencies for exotic pets like birds and reptiles.

The atmosphere is exactly what you want in a crisis: calm and professional. Even though it's an ER and can get busy, the staff is great about triaging quickly so the most critical pets get seen first. They are very transparent about costs, too—they’ll give you a detailed estimate before moving forward with big treatments and they offer flexible payment options like CareCredit. It’s a high-stakes environment, but they manage to keep it feeling compassionate, especially during those really tough "end-of-life" moments.

The staff was amazing. They took care of my dog and they really put forth the effort to find out exactly what was wrong with him. They ended up needing to do a surgery and we were able to get it done the next morning for me. The surgeon called me before and after. The nurse Hilary was absolutely amazing. She touched base with me after our last visit. She called a couple days later later just to kind of check in and she always returns my phone calls. I really appreciate them. 100% Hilary the nurse. Phenomenal at what she does. Wonderful with communication. Really goes the extra mile for you. 100% Hilary the nurse. She's friendly, caring, really listens to my concerns, and genuinely cares about your pet. Dr. Chan was great as well.

Worst care of any animal hospital I've ever been to!! We used to love this place but management fired the best doctor they had amd now the place is run like crap!! I had a dispute over a bill because they misdiagnosed my dog. I brought that same dog back today because he was bitten by a rattlesnake. They refused to save my dog's life because I was displeased with the last visit and wanted them to work with me on the old bill. I was told not talk to, to shut up and listen! This lady Marcy was nasty and refused to believe that her doctor could have been wrong. So now we had to rush to another hospital, hopefully my dog lives. I will NEVER bring any of my dogs back to this place EVER again!! I may sue them for turning us away today

Dr. Strader was an absolute blessing for our family yesterday. We brought our puppy in with a broken jaw and messed up eye. She was very understanding and explained everything that was going on in so much detail for us. She took her time spending time with our pup and examining her. She eased our minds and our hearts. Our pup is home safe and recovering. Thank you so much for your hard work and genuine support.

Yesterday was a very stressful day. Our boy had been vomiting for 5 days straight, mind you we adopted him only a few weeks back and had no idea on where he had been and what life he led. He was crying in pain. We show up to this ER, where I had been crying all morning and we walk in and the receptionist asks "tell me what is going on in 1 sentence " are you for real. No sympathy, no sincerity, nothing! I am not in school my dog is dying. As we go through their strenuous check in process as my dog is yelping in pain the lifeless veterinarian come over to assess. After explaining everything we could she says..I will send you a text to accept the quote for our dog to be treated. A text...not an explanation. This place was lifeless and sterile. As we got our $1200 quote for them to treat our dog, I walked out wasting 1 hour of our precious time. Mind you, I am still crying and still no sincerity. The quote was for a bloodtest, xray and initial visit. Needless to say, a nearby animal hospital got us in with sincerity and open arms. Today my dog is feeling 100% better. Now it's your turn to make your decision if you want the same experience?

Don’t even waste your time and just go to Tropicana Animal Hospital on Trop and Eastern. I know it’s a distance away, but it was so worth it. VE+CC charged us $700 for an X-ray and medications, but didn’t find anything in the X-ray. They recommended we leave him there for one night and another X-ray which would have been anywhere from $2800 to close to $4,000. They rudely recommended we go somewhere else more in our price range (Tropicana), but they had no patience for us when we were clearly emotional and told us our dog was low priority even though he had been vomiting for days. I understand waiting, especially when there are other dogs who are in critical care, but they acted like we were wasting their time. If my dad asked questions we were met with, “Uh yeah I’m getting there” with a passive aggressive tone. We wouldn’t have had to ask so many questions if the vet tech slowed down and spoke calmly. Instead, she spoke fast like she was rushing to get through our “low priority” problem. Later, Tropicana Animal Hospital did an X-ray and found a whole raw baby potato we accidentally dropped stuck instead of our baby that he wasn’t able to pass (he’s a small yorkie and it took up most of his stomach). Tropicana charged us $4,000 for 4 days of staying there, the surgery, the medications, the x-rays, and even for the non invasive procedure that they tried before we had to go the surgical route. That is virtually around the same amount we were quoted for one night’s stay and an x-ray at VE-CC. The Tropicana doctors had empathy, patience, and they all loved and cared for our baby. They even waived the cost of the first night of stay and assured us they wouldn’t charge any extra if he had to stay longer. Oppositely, VE+CC came off as money hungry and lacking empathy. I understand the stress emergency vets go through on a daily basis, but a little kindness and compassion for emotional pet owners GOES A LONG WAY. Once again, just go to Tropicana Animal Hospital, and if there’s anything I’ve learned from this it’s to make sure you have pet insurance!

Quick response time and a friendly staff. The vet tech was empathetic and calming when my husband and I were nervous about our cat. They were friendly and really helped control the energy of the room. The follow-up emails with detailed information were so helpful. They included information about the visit, medication details, and future steps.

This is truly the best vet team I have ever encountered. From the moment we brought Mose in, we felt reassured by the compassion, patience, and genuine care shown by every single person on staff. Thank you so much for the loving attention you’ve given him during such a difficult time. We know we’re not completely through his condition yet, but the peace of mind that comes from having a team we can fully trust means everything. I have no doubt that if we ever need to bring Mose back, he will be in the best possible hands.

A very special thank you to Dr. Mampe, Dr. Posukonis, Dr. Herr, and Lily for your expertise, kindness, and dedication. We are so grateful for everything you’ve done for our boy.

The care we received from the entire team was fantastic. We coud tell they really liked our dog, a frenchie. And the result of the operation was that he is now completely well. A big thank you to everyone, especially Dr. Reynolds. Dr. Reynolds and his assistant (sorry, I can't remember her name now). Our dog loved her so much that when she came to get him, he gladly went with her. Dr. Reynolds saved our dog's eye from further more invasive surgery.
