In the heart of the "City Beautiful," Coral Gables Hospital at 3100 Douglas Road is a cornerstone of the community that predates almost every other modern structure in the area. Established in 1926, just one year after the city itself was incorporated, it has evolved from a humble 35-bed facility into a high-tech medical landmark.

Here is a unique and interesting look at this historic institution:

A "City Beautiful" Original

While George Merrick was busy building Mediterranean arches and red-tiled plazas, Tallman Hospital (as it was originally known) opened its doors to serve the pioneers of the new suburb.

The Pioneer Spirit: It was founded during the height of the Florida Land Boom, surviving the devastating Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 within its first months of operation.

WWII Legacy: During the Second World War, the hospital was a vital local resource, managed at one point by just two dedicated nurses who kept the facility running while the neighboring Biltmore Hotel was converted into a massive military hospital.

The Orthopedic "Center of Excellence"

Today, the hospital is world-renowned for its "Gold Standard" in joint health.

The First in the County: It holds the distinction of being the first hospital in Miami-Dade County to be certified by The Joint Commission for both total hip and total knee replacements.

High-Tech Healing: Despite its nearly century-old history, the hospital is a hub for Robotic Surgery. It uses the latest minimally invasive technology to perform complex procedures that Merrick’s original doctors could only have dreamed of.

A Bridge to the Americas

Because of its strategic location in Coral Gables—a city that serves as a gateway to Latin America—the hospital has a uniquely international flavor.

International Hub: It is a preferred destination for patients traveling from the Caribbean and Latin America seeking specialized care, particularly in urology and orthopedics.

The "Boutique" Feel: Unlike the sprawling, anonymous medical campuses of North Miami, Coral Gables Hospital is a 245-bed "community-based" facility. It maintains a warm, personal atmosphere where the CEO is known to personally visit patient rooms to ensure the "Pura Vida" style of hospitality is upheld.

Award-Winning Resilience

Consistent Quality: In 2026, it continues its streak as a top-tier performer, frequently earning the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award and being named one of the "100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery" in America.

Community Pulse: The hospital remains deeply integrated into local life, sponsoring iconic city events like the Gables Farmers Market and the 4th of July fireworks at the Biltmore.

December 24, 2023, 10:30 a.m. More or less, I went from my house to the hospital that is very close with a heart attack, in approximately 6 minutes they referred me to a large hospital because in this place there is no technology to resolve a heart attack, I only have Medicare Part A, because by the work and grace of some Social Security official, part B is not activated until February 1, 2024, confident that Part A of Medicare covers Hospital and Emergencies, I suddenly discover that due to the policy of the Hospital, doctors, and other subcontractors bill patients directly, and for 6 minutes of stay in the Emergency Room of the Coral Gables Hospital where the only work the Doctor did was tell me that they would transfer me to another Hospital because they did not have conditions there, They are billing me $2,438.00, and the sad thing is that wherever you call, be it the numbers at the Hospital, the company that charges the Doctor, or Medicare, the only thing they want is for you to pay, and the only thing I want is Does someone tell me if that is fair? If that is not taking advantage of a vulnerable person in a life-threatening situation? It is not a question of paying for a job done, but of paying what is fair, and the The feeling is that you are being scammed and robbed, and that is what bothers me, or the insurance, many people tell me don't pay them, but in this case the one who would lose honorability would be me, and not the one who is wanting to make a profit. of the vulnerability of others, here it is not a question of money, but of justice,

This is one of the worst ERs I’ve been to. I came in for a serious issue. They didn’t ask for a list of my medications and did not ask many questions, they did ZERO bloodwork, only ran a urine test even though it was a BLEEDING issue. The ER physician (Ricardo Arsenio Revilla MD) was very condescending. I was not taken seriously and was basically turned away. When I went to Baptist Doctors Hospital, they did the works, even a CT scan for bad migraines. Go there instead.

Absolutely horrific experience. They put my gma in ICU for no reason, Juan (one of the ICU nurses) was the most hostile and rude and hostile people and refused to provide information. He is bald fat and has a bad attitude. The head icu nurse, some cuban guy, is another rude person. My gma was here for a day and i would never dream of ever stepping foot in here agin. STAY AWAY

My words won’t describe how bad this hospital is. I was on 4th floor for over the week. Stuff is most unfriendly and unpleasant, plus if you don’t speak Spanish it will be very hard. Hospital runs by nurses. You won’t believe me but yes their doctors all on call! Night after surgery I developed new symptoms as diarrhea, throw up and I need it pain management modification but no one was able give me anything unless “ doctor on call” will approve. Guess that doctor on call didn’t pick up his phone all night. I suffered all night. It’s how they treat patients . I tried made official complaints with nurse of charger and etc but their response it’s how we do it here. In fact after 8 days in hospital I never met my Physician. Nurse practitioner was making rounds that last 2 minutes. Before you ask a question he would be already in a hall somewhere. I felt very unsafe there. It’s just one example of horror things I went through here. I never been in such unhappy and not caring place in my life.

I’m very afraid of hospitals, and as a first time patient I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The check in process was quick and efficient. I was also cared for quite quickly. While I understand this may vary due to a lot of variables, I was very glad to be out of the ER in an hour & 45 min. My nurse Rich was extremely attentive and kind, and Dr Jen helped me a ton, and was very compassionate. Very glad to know I have a quality hospital near me.

What a terrible hospital! My mom’s friend was here due to pains and inflammation. He got diagnosed with cancer and then they sent him to a rehab center that is literally a house in North Miami and left him there with no care or follow up or treatment.

He was there like 3 days and luckily a social worker showed up and they sent him to Jackson North.

You guys are disgusting and should be ashamed of yourselves.

Don’t go here unless you want to die.

This hospital always delivers a good experience. I have had several family members admitted for care, and they received exceptional service. Most recently my mother in law had a stroke. She spent 4 nights in this hospital and all of the nurses, assistants and doctors were wonderful. Truly caring and competent. Thank you!
