If you’re looking for a spot that perfectly captures that "Arizona-style" Mexican food we all grew up with, Carlos O’Brien’s Mexican Restaurant at 7000 E Mayo Blvd Building #21 is a North Phoenix staple. Located right near the 101 and Scottsdale Road in the Mayo Marketplace, it’s been a local favorite for decades. It’s got a great mix of a lively cantina and a comfortable family dining room, making it just as good for a rowdy happy hour with coworkers as it is for a Sunday dinner with the grandkids.

The menu is huge, but if you ask any regular, they’ll tell you the Pollo Fundido is the absolute star of the show. It’s a deep-fried chicken chimichanga smothered in their famous jalapeño cream cheese and melted cheddar, and honestly, it’s worth the trip alone. They’re also known for their "Irish-Mexican" heritage—a nod to the founder's roots—so you’ll find some unique twists alongside classics like sizzling fajitas and thick, hand-pressed tortillas. Their salsa has just the right amount of kick, and the portions are generous enough that you’ll almost always be taking a box home.

One of the best features of this location is the outdoor patio. It’s shaded and spacious, which is perfect for enjoying one of their signature margaritas or a cold Irish beer during those beautiful Arizona evenings. If you’re looking to save a few bucks, their Happy Hour (typically 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM) is legendary around here for discounted appetizers like the Mini Sampler and great deals on drinks. It’s a low-stress, friendly environment where the servers actually remember your name if you come in often enough.

They keep consistent hours so you can get your Mexican food fix all week long. They are open Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and they stay open a little later on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Whether you're stopping in for a quick lunch special or settling in for a long dinner, Carlos O’Brien’s delivers that consistent, home-cooked quality that keeps the parking lot full year after year.

This place has delicious tortilla chips and the man who brings the chips is one of the nicest people ever! With the chips i recommend ordering the spinach queso. For your main course the name Carlos O’Briens does not disappoint. The Mexican food is delicious but if you aren’t feeling Mexican they have great pub food! I go here probably 3 times a month and love it every time!

Went there on St. Patrick's Day and had corned beef tacos, something different. Others in party had two kinds of salad and a full corned beef and cabbage dinner. Somehow I lost picture of my tacos.

I absolutely love Carlos O'Brien's they have the best the best jalapeno cream cheese dip! My favorite plate is the sampler combination of a bean tostada chicken enchilada cheese tamale and 2 taqitos (rolled tacos). Carlos O'Brien's has a wide variety of drinks alcoholic and non-alcoholic the service is always very friendly very nice very nice and comfortable cool Spanish music playing in the background and an awesome fried ice cream for dessert. I apologize for not having any photos of my dish or dessert I was very very very very hungry after working a long shift.

Had to return the taco salad twice. Once had cold chicken, the other time had a stale shell.

Happy hour prices are a bit expensive, but the Huckleberry margarita was good and decent chips and salsa for free.

We are always around this complex but never knew there was a Mexican restaurant here. Tried their spinach enchilada dinner. It was creamy and heavy. Taste is decent but nothing special. Portion size was good and also got complimentary nachos and salsa. They were ok too. Overall it’s good for the price and location. Service was good and nice ambiance.

I have often wondered, "how much cheese really is too much?" This restaurant didn't necessarily answer that question, but it got me a close as I've ever been. I struggled to find the tortilla in the cheese enchilada and it really was pretty bland: cheese, lettuce, a little bit of tomato sauce. Chips were good. Service was good. Place is clean. The echoing room could have used some music. Portions are generous. Cheese quantities are shocking.

I have been a fan of this restaurant chain for over 40 years. This was my first time at this location, and I have no complaints. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The food as always...did not disappoint. The plates have gotten noticeably smaller and went up a bit in price, but hey, that's our economy.

Always a five star! Have been going to Carlos for 38 years. After the closure of 12th st and Nortern, this one is the best all around.

Very good food. We've been going to Carlos Obriens since the early 80's. My girlfried and I used to go to the old Northern and 16St location for our dates back in high school and once we were married continued to go there with our children before we left the valley in 04. Everytime we came back to town to visit family we would always make time to dine at Carlos! When they sadly closed the Northern location, I think this location replicates the old location in flavor of its dishes. The old location out in the West Valley that's now closed was nowhere near the flavor of the Northern location. The location up in Happy Valley has a different taste to their dishes as well. I'll stick with this location for the time being and hoping that they'll decide to open a central location again and bring back the whole gang from the Northern location!

We had a large group dinner here, and the restaurant did a great job. Server was very patient and gave great service. Fajitas were tasty and I think everyone enjoyed their entrees. We ate on a Tuesday and the restaurant was full. Great sign and unexpected for a Tuesday night. Shows that many people like the place as well.

Both my wife and I had the Pollo Fundido. The food was fresh, and the flavors were spot on. I would highly recommend Carlos O'Brien's for great food and service.

The food was delicious & service was great! We can't wait to eat there again! I would also recommend most of the combinations, Chicken con Queso, and the Botanos Especial. Their house Margarita at happy hour is a good deal too.

Worst Mexican food I've had in years. How can something as simple as a steak quesadilla be almost inedible, Carlos O'Brien's will gladly show you.

Honestly it was just the food that ruined the experience. It was microwaved and i literally didn’t even eat it. We came to visit from New Mexico and it was terrible so much onions on the dishes and it was sloppy and huevos rancheros were like soup lol. It was so bad I paid for it and left. I wouldn’t recommend.

Food was good, server was never around. Ordered a side of PICO was given a tiny cup and she charged me $2.25 for it. It was like the amount of a spoonful. Really?! But chips and salsa are free? Makes no sense

Heidi is the best server ever. We hadn't seen her in years. But she remembered everything we usually order and just how we like it. We have been visiting this location ever since it opened. The only thing better than the salsa and food is the service.
