If you’re a pet owner in the North Valley, you know that the most stressful moments often happen in the middle of the night. That’s where VetMED Emergency & Specialty Veterinary Hospital at 20612 N Cave Creek Rd comes in. Located right near Cave Creek and Beardsley, just north of the 101, it’s a massive, 24-hour facility that serves the 85024 area and beyond. For those of us who treat our pets like our children, it’s a huge relief to have a place that stays open 365 days a year, including every holiday.

What really distinguishes VetMED is that it’s not just an ER; it’s a specialty referral hub. They have board-certified specialists in fields like cardiology, internal medicine, dermatology, and radiology. This means if your dog has a tricky heart condition or your cat needs an advanced ultrasound, they have the high-tech equipment—and the experts—to handle it right there. They work as an extension of your regular neighborhood vet, stepping in when your pet needs more specialized attention or overnight monitoring that a standard clinic just can't provide.

One of the biggest benefits for local families is their transparency and communication. Anyone who has been to a pet ER knows how scary the "unknown" can be, but the staff here is famously good about explaining exactly what’s happening with your pet and providing clear, upfront cost estimates. The facility is kept incredibly clean and organized, and while it’s a high-volume hospital, the technicians and doctors are known for staying calm and compassionate even when things get busy. It’s the kind of environment that helps take the "panic" out of a pet emergency.

Logistics are a breeze because the hospital is located on a frontage road with plenty of well-lit parking, so you don’t have to struggle with a heavy kennel across a dark lot at 2:00 AM. Since they are a "no appointment needed" emergency center, they are always ready for walk-ins, though they prioritize the most critical cases first. Whether you’re a lifelong Phoenix resident or just passing through, having a world-class veterinary ICU right off the freeway is a total game-changer for the safety of our furry neighbors.

Business Hours:

Emergency & Critical Care: Open 24/7, 365 days a year

Specialty Services: Available by appointment (Monday – Friday) (Note: If your pet is having a life-threatening emergency, it’s always helpful to call them while you're on the way so they can have a team ready at the door.)

Thank you to the staff: from the front desk, to techs and vet who made a horrible visit (euthanasia) a peaceful and positive experience.

I brought in some neonate kittens I found who were very sick and while I wanted to do everything possible to save them, I simply couldn't afford a $2,000-$3,000 vet bill for a 5 day old kitten who most likely would not make it anyways. The doctor and techs explained everything with empathy and kindness and agreed that this little one was suffering and most likely would need euthanasia regardless of what we attempted.

They allowed me time to process my decision without making me feel rushed. The gave me space to explore every avenue and ultimately helped me decide the best route to take while keeping her beat interests at heart.

During the euthanasia, Dr Hough had kind energy and I spoke the our little kitty as she passed on from this world and even added some positive energy of her own. I could not ask for a better experience for the kitten and myself and am so thankful for this vet for keeping in mind the emotions of their patients/clients.

Teddy was so well taken care of! Every staff member I spoke with told me what a good boy he was. The medical team was great answering my questions and making sure I know what the possible causes of Teddy's symptoms were, and why they were recommending each item on the estimate. I've brought my other dog (Luna) to VetMed as well and have always had a good experience. I recommend VetMed to everyone in my area of the valley. The tech who did my check-in was awesome. I knew she would take great care of Teddy and she made sure I got a discount applied to my account for working in the industry. the extra TLC they gave Teddy in addition to great medical care.

They did a great job cleaning up Joey after his desert adventure. He had so much cactus on him. The care Joey received was great.

I always go to Vet Med when my dogs need a special Veterinarian. So much better than going to my regular vet for 6/8 weeks only to find out I could have made 1 visit to VetMed.
