Sacramento, 7551 Timberlake Way # 100, Sacramento, CA 95823

In the south end of Sacramento, where the diverse neighborhoods of Valley Hi and Florin meet, Barbara Arnold, MD has spent over four decades serving as a dedicated guardian of her patients' vision. Located at 7551 Timberlake Way, Suite 100, her practice is a far cry from the hurried, impersonal feel of a corporate medical group. Dr. Arnold, a board-certified ophthalmologist, is a trailblazer who was the first woman accepted into the University of Colorado’s ophthalmology program and served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force before opening her doors in Sacramento in 1981. She deliberately chose this location to serve a community that is often overlooked, bringing world-class eye care directly to the people who need it most.

What truly makes a visit to Dr. Arnold unique is her perspective as both a master scientist and a celebrated watercolor artist. She believes that vision is about more than just a physical measurement; it is about the profound connection between the eyes and the brain. This artistic sensibility infuses her medical practice with a rare level of empathy and patience. Whether she is performing a pre-operative evaluation for cataract surgery or managing complex conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration, she treats the "whole patient." She is famously known for teaching watercolor classes to the visually impaired, proving her belief that a loss of sight should never mean a loss of vision or creativity.

The technical depth at the Timberlake Way office is exceptional, spanning over 50 years of clinical experience. Dr. Arnold is a specialist in retinal diseases and vitreous disorders, but she remains a generalist at heart, handling everything from routine exams to in-office YAG laser procedures. Her office is a multilingual hub where patients can receive care in English, Hmong, Vietnamese, and Tagalog, ensuring that language is never a barrier to health. As a volunteer clinical professor at UC Davis, she stays at the absolute forefront of ophthalmic research, but she still maintains the "solo practice" charm where she actually has the time to sit down and listen to your concerns.

Operating with a philosophy of "straight talk," Dr. Arnold is known for her transparency regarding surgical outcomes and the necessity of different treatments. She is highly respected for her work with pterygium and diabetic eye care, and her practice is affiliated with top-tier local institutions like Methodist Hospital and UC Davis Medical Center. If you are looking for a Sacramento eye doctor who combines the precision of an expert surgeon with the heart of a community philanthropist and the eye of an artist, Dr. Barbara Arnold remains a premier choice for protecting your sight for a lifetime.

One of my default tests of a medical office is to see if I can get someone on the phone quickly. The staff here was very responsive and friendly and were able to accommodate an appointment for my mom without issue.

My mom loves working with Dr. Arnold and her team and she spent a lot of time explaining test results once the exam was over. Dr. Arnold is very active in the Sacramento community and it's great to meet someone so involved and caring.

Highly recommended!

It's been a long long time since I had my cataract surgery with her. I thought I had given a review but could not find one here.

I had a postcard hidden in a CD case and it was one of her paintings.

So I had a great experience with her. Her staff was excellent and she was wonderful and I felt I could trust her. I'm going to guess how long its been since I had the surgery, on both eyes...maybe 15 years......

I do not need reading glasses anymore and I see great. What more can I say....

I was diagnosed with a rare eye condition that was in remission and had been receiving treatment at UC Davis. Unfortunately, after my health insurance changed, my new plan no longer covered UC Davis. Soon after, I began experiencing double vision in my left eye and urgently needed to see an ophthalmologist, so I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Barbara Arnold, who was listed as an in-network provider.

From the moment she entered the room, it was clear that she was not pleased to see me. I sensed her discomfort might be because she wasn’t familiar with my rare condition. She kept insisting that I return to UC Davis, which was frustrating since I had no other options. Instead of focusing on my double vision, she spent most of the appointment criticizing my weight and making comments about my clean shoes (because clean shoes on fat people is bad?) SMH. It felt like she was more interested in berating me for my appearance than addressing my vision concerns.

Dr. Arnold scheduled a follow-up appointment for six months later and told me I needed to lose weight, suggesting that my double vision would disappear once I did.

Feeling anxious about going back to her, I talked to a friend who encouraged me to see a different doctor. I eventually made an appointment with a new primary care physician at Sutter, who referred me to a neuro-ophthalmologist. They conducted an MRI, MRV, spinal tap, and blood tests, which confirmed that my rare eye condition had returned.

Because Dr. Arnold didn’t address my condition early on, I now risk losing vision in my left eye due to her inadequate care. If she wasn’t familiar with my situation, she could have told me that and mentioned a few doctors she had in mind, so I could check with my insurance to see if they were in-network. I could have seen a competent doctor who might have prevented this vision loss.

I believe Dr. Arnold needs to reconsider her role in medicine, as her approach to patient care is lacking.
