Russian Store Beriozka

If you’re looking for a taste of Eastern Europe right here in West Sacramento, you’ve got to check out Russian Store Beriozka at 958 Sacramento Ave. It’s tucked away in a spot that might be easy to drive past if you aren’t looking for it, but for those of us in the neighborhood, it’s a total staple. Walking inside feels like taking a quick trip to a local market in Kyiv or Moscow. It’s cozy, clean, and filled with the kind of nostalgic snacks and high-quality foods that you just won't find at a typical Safeway or Raley's.

The real star of Beriozka is definitely the deli and smoked meat counter. They have an incredible selection of authentic sausages, salamis, and smoked fish that are perfect for putting together a charcuterie board that will actually impress people. If you’re a fan of traditional dairy, their selection of farmer's cheese (tvorog) and kefir is top-notch. I always find myself hovering around the candy aisle, too—they have those classic wrapped chocolates and gingerbread cookies (pryaniki) sold by the weight, which are a huge hit if you have kids or just a serious sweet tooth.

What makes this place a go-to for locals is the quality of their prepared foods and pantry staples. You can grab jars of authentic pickles, marinated mushrooms, and specialty jams that taste like they were made in someone’s home kitchen. It’s also the best place in town to find proper buckwheat (grechka) and a massive variety of loose-leaf teas. The staff is always friendly and down-to-earth, and even if you don’t speak the language, they’re happy to help you figure out which loaf of fresh rye bread is the crustiest.
