Anchorage, 5000 W International Airport Rd, Anchorage, AK 99502

If you’re landing at Ted Stevens and need a set of wheels that can actually handle the "Alaskan experience," the Avis Car Rental at 5000 W International Airport Rd is a local staple. Being right on-site at the airport's Rental Car Center, it’s super convenient—you just grab your bags and hop on the free airport shuttle that runs every 15 minutes. It’s a locally owned franchise that’s been around since the 50s, so the people behind the counter actually know the difference between a scenic drive to Seward and a trek up to Fairbanks.

What really makes this Avis stand out is how they prep their fleet for our unique weather. While other places might give you a standard sedan, these guys specialize in winter-ready SUVs and 4x4s equipped with remote starts—a total lifesaver on those 10°F mornings. They even go the extra mile by pre-installing winter tires and providing ice scrapers in every car. If you're a member of Avis Preferred, you can usually skip the main line and get to your car even faster, which is great when you just want to get your trip started.

Another big plus is the flexibility they offer for exploring the state. They are one of the few spots that make one-way rentals easy, so you can pick up your truck in Anchorage and drop it off in places like Fairbanks, Whittier, or Kenai without a headache. For the locals, they offer a "free pick-up" service from downtown hotels, and many neighbors use them for a "PFD Adventure" or when their own rig is in the shop and they need something reliable for a weekend in the mountains.

The hours here are great for those late-night or early-bird flights that are so common in Alaska. They are open every day from 5:30 AM to 2:30 AM, and they even have a 24-hour drop-off box if you’re catching a red-eye. The staff is known for being thorough—they’ll even walk around the car with a tablet to take photos so there’s no confusion about dings or dents later. It’s a professional, no-nonsense operation that understands exactly what it takes to drive in the North.

This was the worst rental experience I have had in years.

I understand this is a licensed location and not a corporate Avis branch, but customers do not see that distinction when booking through Avis.com. I made a one-way reservation from Anchorage to Fairbanks using our corporate account, which includes contracted rates and vehicle protections.

At the counter, I was told our corporate rates and protections did not apply in Alaska and that our billed account could not be used. None of this was disclosed when the reservation was made. The only thing honored was the fact that it was a one-way rental.

We were then told the drive to Fairbanks was dangerous and that we “needed” studded tires. The SUV already had them installed, but they are treated as an add-on at $35 per day. We were also told our corporate protection coverage would not apply and that we needed to purchase LDW again. While technically optional, the implication was clear: if we were driving one way to Fairbanks, this was all “necessary.”

Fast forward to Fairbanks. It is -35 degrees and the vehicle will not start.

When I asked our hotel if they had a jump box, the receptionist asked if the car had been plugged in overnight. I told her it did not have a plug. She was shocked and said, “They didn’t give you a winterized vehicle?” The jump box did nothing. The car had to be towed — at my expense, since we declined the additional roadside coverage on a vehicle that should have been properly prepared for Alaska in the first place.

The Fairbanks Avis staff were surprised we had been sent north in a non-winterized vehicle and even asked if we had told the Anchorage counter we were driving to Fairbanks. We absolutely did — in fact, the Anchorage agent hand-wrote the Fairbanks phone number on our rental agreement.

The result: a stranded vehicle in extreme conditions, towing charges, and a missed excursion.

This felt less like customer service and more like aggressive upselling at the expense of safety and transparency.

We were stranded in -35 degrees in Fairbanks because Avis failed to provide us with a winterized car. When we told the agent we were driving to Fairbanks she was sure to upsell us studded tires but failed to make sure we would be safe with a winterized vehicle ( turns out they have to have an extra plug to plug in to keep the battery from freezing. ) We had to have the vehicle towed to exchange cars just to find out the second car’s battery was dead. Do better Avis; people can die in -35 degrees and that should be more important than profit.

Car was brand new. Pick up was not booked until 12pm but, when we called and asked if we could pick up the car couple of hours earlier, they said yes, no problem. Great service.

An Avis "licensee" - representative confirmed over the phone that no Avis points are given, and included coverages that show up on reservations (eg LDW on corporate rental rates) are not honored. Avoid.

The service was friendly and fast, and the car was well-equipped for driving on snow covered pavement. Our rental sedan was a Camry with all-wheel drive, all-weather floor mats, and even an engine block heater with a plug sticking out of the hood. We had rented from Avis Alaska in the past, so they had my information saved and did not upsell me on any extra insurance. As with all car rentals in Alaska, you do need to stop at the counter regardless of your loyalty status (there was no line when we rented). The return was quick as well.

Rented a car last week from this location and wanted to shout out all employees at the Avis airport. Frederick helped us at the check in desk and couldn't have been nicer and more accomodating. The checkout attendant was thorough and fast as was the process when we dropped the car off. Everyone was fabulous and so helpful! Thank you.
