New York City, 1243 Avenue U, Brooklyn, NY 11229

If you’re walking down Avenue U in Sheepshead Bay and the craving for something warm and soul-satisfying hits, you’ve got to duck into Pho Viet Nam at 1243 Avenue U. Located right in the 11229 zip code, this place has been a neighborhood anchor for years. It isn’t some flashy, over-the-top fusion spot; it’s a cozy, reliable "hole-in-the-wall" that locals love because it feels like stepping into someone’s home kitchen. You’ll see a traditional shrine at the entrance and simple, welcoming decor that tells you exactly what to expect: honest, authentic food that doesn't need a fancy presentation to taste great.

The main event here is, of course, the Pho. Their signature Extra Big Bowl Combination (Xe Lua) is a local legend—it’s massive, packed with different cuts of beef and brisket, and the broth is rich and aromatic without being overly salty. If you’re not in the mood for soup, their Beef Cubes over Rice (Bo Luc Lac) is a total "chef’s kiss" moment, with tender, marinated meat that’s full of flavor. For something lighter but still satisfying, the Banh Xeo (a crispy Vietnamese pancake stuffed with shrimp and sprouts) or the Grilled Pork Vermicelli bowls are always winners.

What really distinguishes Pho Viet Nam from the other spots in South Brooklyn is the consistent quality and the value. In a city where prices seem to go up every week, you can still get a giant, steaming bowl of noodles here that will actually keep you full. It’s the kind of place where the service is quick and the staff is no-nonsense, which is perfect for a fast lunch or a casual weeknight dinner with the family. They also make a killer Vietnamese Iced Coffee with sweetened condensed milk that is the perfect mid-day pick-me-up if you’re just passing through the neighborhood.

The vibe is unpretentious and comfortable, making it a great spot to decompress. While it can get busy during the weekend rush, the turnover is fast, so you’re rarely waiting long for a table. For those nights when you just want to stay in, they are one of the most popular delivery spots in Brooklyn, known for packing their soups carefully so the broth stays hot and the noodles don't get mushy. Whether you’re a long-time regular or a first-timer looking for the best broth on Avenue U, Pho Viet Nam is a high-quality, reliable staple that never misses the mark.

My go-to Viet spot in South Brooklyn!! It's an authentic, comforting neighborhood spot run by the sweetest twins. The food here ALWAYS hits and the service is quick. Their Spring Rolls have a nice crisp and their Pho is great, however my FAVORITE dish is their Beef Cubes over Rice - chef's kiss!!

Other honorable mentions are the Banh Xeo, which is basically a crispy Viet Pancake with shrimp and bean sprouts filling, and Crispy Calamari, YUM!!

One downside is that the prices have gone up over the years, but TRUST that you can always find me here when I'm craving Pho in the neighborhood!!

Pho Vietnam — Avenue U, Brooklyn

In the lively stretch of Avenue U in South Brooklyn, where bakeries, noodle shops, and dim sum parlors compete for attention, Pho Vietnam quietly holds its own as a neighborhood favorite for Vietnamese comfort food. It’s not flashy, and that’s part of its charm. The dining room is simple and relaxed—exactly the kind of place where locals drop in for a warm bowl of pho on a cold Brooklyn evening.

The menu leans classic: steaming bowls of pho with fragrant broth, crisp spring rolls, and the familiar staples of Vietnamese street-style cooking. The pho itself is dependable and deeply comforting—clear broth layered with star anise, beef, and herbs, served with a generous plate of basil, lime, and bean sprouts.

But the real standout here isn’t only the pho.
It’s the Vietnamese pork chop over rice.

The plate arrives with a beautifully grilled pork chop—caramelized at the edges, smoky from the grill, and resting over a bed of fluffy jasmine rice with fresh vegetables on the side. The meat is juicy and savory, but what elevates the dish is the house fish sauce dressing. Instead of the usual small dipping cup, the restaurant places the sauce in a bottle right on the table, letting diners pour as much as they want.

And once you start pouring, it’s hard to stop.
The sweet-savory sauce soaks into the rice, brightened with garlic and a hint of acidity, turning every bite into something addictive. It’s one of those small but thoughtful touches that makes the meal feel generous and personal—exactly the type of detail that keeps neighborhood regulars coming back.

Service is friendly and unfussy, and the pace is quick enough for a casual lunch or weeknight dinner. While Avenue U has no shortage of dining options, Pho Vietnam stands out for its honest cooking and comforting flavors.
Come for the pho, stay for the pork chop rice—and don’t hold back on that sauce.

My favorite local spot to grab a bowl of hot pho on a rainy day, or even on a summer afternoon. I also stop by here sometimes for a little to-go boba treat and summer rolls.

It's one of the best places for Pho! In NYC! Bread and spring rolls are delicious too.

This place is great. Very lovely dine-in experience with great service. The Vietnamese pancake is not easy to find, but it's an incredible appetizer or light meal.

Decent food but be warned they enforce a credit card minimum of $15 instead of the maximum $10 required by card companies. Never seen any other place do this before.

I've been coming here since 2001 cos they make some of the best vietnamese, for a great price. Basically, a no frills just good food spot.

Today I ordered my favorite Bahn Mi for takeout and was surprised to find that they've skimped on the stuffing. It used to be stuffed to the brim with pickled carrots and turnips, cucumbers, and delicious lemongrass chicken (or whatever meat you chose). Today I'm sad to say the ratio just isn't doing it for me and I won't be getting Bahn Mi here anymore.

Ordered take out and they forgot to give me sprouts and basil mint for my pho. The rice dish that I had came with cold rice. What a disaster. I gave it three stars cause I have had better meals from them before.
