In the quiet medical district of Montgomery, Capital City Gastroenterology PC at 4126 Carmichael Ct serves as a specialized sanctuary for digestive health. Since its founding in 2004, the practice has defined itself through a unique "whole-person" philosophy, combining high-level endoscopic surgery with a mission to treat patients with medical, moral, and spiritual sensitivity.
Here is why this Carmichael Court office is a vital hub for gastrointestinal care in the River Region:
The Vibe: Academic Precision with a Spiritual Heart
The atmosphere at Capital City Gastroenterology is professional and deeply compassionate. Guided by their mission to render care with "sound medical and spiritual principles," the team creates an environment where patients aren't just clinical cases, but individuals seeking a better quality of life. It is a space where complex digestive questions are met with unhurried, expert answers.
Why This Practice Is Truly Unique:
The "Detective" Specialists: The clinic is anchored by highly experienced providers like Dr. Nina Nelson-Garrett, a Vanderbilt and Emory-trained specialist with over 35 years of experience. She is widely regarded as a local expert in Pancreatic Disease and Esophageal Disorders, often taking on the "difficult-to-diagnose" cases that require a veteran's intuition.
Peace Corps Perspective: The practice features diverse clinical leadership, including Dr. Heather Echols, a second-generation gastroenterologist who served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. Her background in Public Health and International Studies brings a unique, global empathy to the local Montgomery community.
The "PillCam" Pioneers: They are a regional leader in PillCam Endoscopy. For patients who cannot undergo traditional invasive procedures, this tiny, swallowable camera offers a painless, high-definition "tour" of the small intestine to diagnose Crohn's disease and hidden bleeding.
Why Montgomery Families Trust the Team:
A "Safety Net" for the Community: The practice is a cornerstone of the Capital City Medical Society, deeply involved in local health advocacy and ensuring the diverse population of Montgomery has access to elite digestive diagnostics.
Integrated Nursing Leadership: The physicians are supported by a powerhouse team of Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs), including Jenny Browning and Ashley Morrow, who are praised for their "patient-first" bedside manner and accessibility.
Affiliation with Excellence: By maintaining strong ties with Baptist Health, the practice ensures that if a patient’s journey moves from the clinic to a hospital setting, they remain within a highly-awarded, top-tier medical network.
The Insider Move: If you are visiting for a colonoscopy screening, the office is known for being exceptionally thorough in their pre-procedure education. Be sure to ask about their "Diagnostic vs. Screening" distinctions—their billing specialists are experts at helping you understand your insurance coverage before you ever step into the procedure room.

TOP important and interesting reviews from patients
- My NP is Jackie Shumate. She seems to care and tries to address my concerns. She takes far more time to listen and render care than what I have gotten in the past. The office staff was nice and professional as well. My visit was positive. I only hope I can get this colonoscopy completed before the year is ends and not next July when they scheduled me. They explained since one of the doctors retired, it is taking longer to get procedures scheduled with only one doctor. I’m hopeful.
- I am very thankful for the staff at Capital City Gastro...they are always friendly and personable. They take time to speak to you and let you know they genuinely care about keeping you well. I have a plethora of issues with my stomach and colon...and without the help of Capital City Gastro I don't know where I'd be...as I said earlier..I am very thankful for the ladies at this clinic....and will continue!
- Nurse practitioner Jackie is absolutely wonderful. She's very thorough, takes her time listening to you and answering all questions. She goes above and beyond to help her patients. The front office staff was very professional. A special thank you to Tracy!!!
