H Mart Elkins Park

Located at 7320 Old York Rd, H Mart Elkins Park is a foundational piece of the Philadelphia area’s culinary landscape. Long before the "K-Wave" went mainstream, this location was—and remains—a vital cultural anchor. It is famously the "OG" location that helped inspire Michelle Zauner’s best-selling memoir, Crying in H Mart, giving it a unique place in literary and pop culture history.

The Elkins Park Highlights

The Two-Story Experience: Unlike most single-level supermarkets, this H Mart is split into two distinct worlds. The ground floor is a dense, high-energy grocery market, while the second floor houses a massive, "hidden" food court and a mini-mall of specialty shops.

More Food Court (2nd Floor): This is one of the most authentic Korean food halls in Pennsylvania. It features multiple stalls serving sizzling dolsot bibimbap, crispy Donkatsu, and the legendary Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles). It is a local ritual to shop downstairs and then head upstairs for a steaming bowl of spicy soft tofu stew.

The "Banchan" Specialist: Local regulars often claim this location has the best Banchan (side dishes) in the Philly area. Look for the "mom-and-pop" style stalls near the entrance and in the deli section that offer dozens of varieties of house-made kimchi, marinated squid, and seasoned roots.

Fresh Dumpling & Bun Station: Near the entrance, you’ll find a dedicated station for giant, fluffy steamed buns (Wang-mandu) and handmade dumplings. These are often sold hot and fresh from large metal steamers, making them the ultimate grab-and-go comfort food.

Cultural Mini-Mall: The complex feels like a small neighborhood in Seoul. Beyond the groceries, you’ll find a Paris Baguette, a Gong Cha for bubble tea, a Korean skincare boutique, and even professional services like an eyewear shop and a pharmacy.

Why It’s Unique

H Mart Elkins Park is defined by its "unfiltered authenticity." While newer locations (like the one on Front Street) are larger and more "polished," Elkins Park feels like a true community hub. It is uniquely nested in a shopping plaza that includes the high-end Korean restaurant DuBu and Sang Kee, creating a "Super-Koreatown" corner where you can spend an entire afternoon eating and exploring.

Insider Tip: Parking can be a "creative" experience during the weekend rush. If the main lot is full, check the upper-level parking area which often has a separate entrance and provides more direct access to the 2nd-floor food court.

I love HMart and this one is a bit smaller, but has everything you need, most likely. Great produce section. We also really enjoy the upstairs food court at the Elkins Park location. You can get a big portion of delicious food for less than $15

During this trip they were breaking down freight so it seemed there was no way yoh could really go and not be in the way. The cashiers are not really personable and it felt like a rushed transaction I couldn't gather my things fast enough before they were ringing and totaling the next customer.

The same Sushi fish is cheaper here then the other H Mart and this one is usually less crowded.
However, please note this ***warning***- the bluefin tuna is defrosted in a vacuum sealed pouch. This is a serious health threat as it can cause potentially deadly bacteria to grow anaerobically. I have contacted them through email but they have not changed this practice. It must stop immediately.
It also makes me wonder what other violations might be going on.

I am giving this place a 3 for now. I didnt know what to expect when I got there. So many things. Had to rein myself in. I want to do some research on some beauty products before I buy. But now I know where to go for a few things which is awesome. Plus my mom will be so happy with the huge Kimchi selection. And next time I will get something from the food court upstairs.

What a wonderful community resource. The shelves are stocked with a dizzying array of products from Korea and East Asia - in addition to all the other mainstays you would expect in any supermarket. The food court is worth the trip in itself. Parking can be tight. This is worth the trip.

I like this store! This store has a large selection of assorted Asian fresh produce. Caribbean people will love the selection and variety of seafood and fresh produce. Always a quick in and out!

I used to shop here regularly and loved it, back around 2011-2015. The prices have really skyrocketed in the past 5-8 years or so, rising much faster than inflation and rising faster than the prices in other supermarkets. This place used to have similar prices to a regular supermarket, even slightly cheaper, but with superior quality. Now, it is much more expensive. I also think the quality has slipped; last time I was here the produce had quite a few wilting or rotting vegetables and herbs. I still drop in for a few specialty products I cannot get elsewhere, but this store is no longer suitable for regular weekly shopping. Not sure why the prices here have soared, as I have visited other smaller Korean groceries and their prices did not rise anywhere near as much as H-Mart's did. I no longer really recommend this place, I used to get so excited about it, but at this price point, it is nothing special.

Got to come to HMart at Elkins Park because my friend wanted chicken. I got to grab a few things from the grocery store. I got some already cut watermelon and mango. They look so fresh and sweet. I also got some grapefruit that was a nice size for the price. Oh, and some golden kiwi and I wanted to try black bean ramen. The store was clean and organized, and checkout was fast. The cashier packed everything nicely and was very pleasant. I didn't get a chance to try the chicken, but it smelled really good. I also got a matcha with boba. It was soooo delicious and creamy. Can't wait to go back.

I only wish this place was closer. They often have better deals that I seldom see in the Hmarts in NJ. And I like the layout…big place, clean — simply a great place to shop.
