Not a great experience at Tampa airport. Was given an older vehicle, which had multiple issues. Exchanged it, but got another older vehicle that wasn't very well specced.


Bogus charge for fuel. Somehow they measure the fuel level to a tenth of a gallon. Given the car is equipped with an analog gauge and the gas station pump automatically shuts-off when it thinks the tank is full, Avis will get you every time. Total Rip Off!


Love using Avis rentals it’s so easy just leave the keys in the car. You don’t have to speak to anyone they email your receipt and you’re off to your gate. I would highly recommend them.


This company is a scam. A $60 car for one day turned into $188. I returned it full and they still charged me for gas. Avoid Avis at all costs.


Avoid guy named Nenad at TPA Avis, sneaky tries to push B/S insurance policies rushes you so you don’t notice what you are signing. Puts you in a worse car that you booked and is rude. Never book through Avis again.


Even though we reserved, months in advance, a hybrid van, we were told no vans were available. So we were given a Ford expedition Max which was a gas guzzler. Then we made sure to fill the tank before returning the car, but they still charged us $86 dollars for gas upon return. Unfortunately I should have saved my gas receipt and taken a picture of the gas gauge. Lesson learned. Otherwise the truck ran perfectly and was very clean.


Clean outside, filthy interior with an awful smell. Car had a sat navigation screen but when accessed it stated that the sat navigation module was not activated. Such a shame as Avis had a good name in the past.

Agent was very pushy trying to talk us into extras we didn't need. He claimed I got a free car upgrade, gave me a mustang I ended up switching to a jetta outside. I didn't want the mustang. I wanted a 4 door standard I reserved. I wasn't given a free upgrade and my total was way more than it was estimated since he charged me for a mustang I didn't even leave with. The car we got smelled and was dirty inside. It kept giving us a low battery on key fob warning. What a rip off.


Edit I emailed them per response to my review and no reply or follow up.


Poor experience from start to finish. Unhelpful and rude staff when collecting the car who tried to charge for an additional driver despite this being included with the package I booked through BA holidays. Despite booking an inclusive car hire package I have got home to find an additional charge of $544 on my credit card by Avis despite the agreement stating zero additional charges. I will never be using again.


Don't use, avoid. Unprofessional. Added two insurances to my contract that I didn't ask for: Personal Accident Insurance and Personal Effects Protection. Both of which I had covered by my travel insurance. Underhand practice, taking advantage of tired, weary travellers. In fairness I complained to Avis head office and the money was refunded. Check your contract for additional, un-agreed items!!!


I would look to another company for my next rental.


Excellent experience! Even had to extend our rental and that took just 2 minutes with the app.


Wrong directions to pick up car. Customer service was very hurried. Surprised a new car doesn't have GPS enabled.


The car was given to me dirty inside and out. The inside of windows were filthy. Outside of car was dirty and should’ve been washed. And to top it off, the windshield washer fluid was never refilled or topped off. So a dirty car inside and out, and no washer fluid. Avis service has continued to be straight trash & embarrassing. Only worthy of one star for giving me a decent model to drive although filthy.


Very difficult to get in touch with when there's an issue. Customer service is not helpful. I reserved a specific car type (sports car) and prepaid for it. The car type and amount prepaid was confirmed multiple times. The day before the rental, I received an email that my car type was changed (compact SUV) and the amount was LOWER than what I had actually prepaid. This was never resolved and I now have to dispute with my credit card company. Will never do business with AVIS again.


Avis Preferred member, rented a 12 passenger sprinter van for a big golf trip weekend. It was so easy to pickup the van, the friendly staff member at the main desk informed me that I could just walk right to the garage to pickup the van. When I arrived at the garage, I noticed my name was not listed on the board, but assumed it was because I was renting a specialty vehicle. Just asked the garage attendant and asked for me to verify my name, and told me where the van was located. Would certainly use Avis again for the same type of vehicle!

Rented a car on Christmas Eve at Avis and waited in line for 3 hours because they didn’t have any cars available. The lady at the counter was extremely rude and wouldn’t let me read the agreement. She went in front of the kiosk and clicked through the agreement herself, saying there was a line and no time. I reserved an intermediate SUV but was given an entry-level SUV instead. She told me where the car is and DIDN'T PRINT THE RENTAL AGREEMENT. THIS IS ILLEAGAL

I Booked an intermediate SUV. I was given a Toyota Camray sedan. There was a very long line so I took the car. I called the next day and was told to bring it to another location to see if there was an SUV available. That was not convenient. I was told I would get a credit for the downgrade. When I called customer service after I got home they said that the Camray was the same class as the SUV. They would not adjust the price. I looked up the rental for the same SUV and the same Toyota Camray. The Camray was listed as $13 less per day than the SUV. So it is not the same class. Avis just lost a good customer. I'll never use them again. I suggest that you not use them.

I will give Avis credit. They contacted me immediately and saw that I had a valid claim. They made an acceptable adjustment. I appreciate their follow up and doing what was right.

In a dozen times trying to pick up a car here as a President’s Club member, they’ve never had a car in the spot assigned to me. This past time, they assigned me a pick up spot which didn’t exist. Account for waiting in line for at least 30 minutes during the season for them to sort things out. The staff is doing the best they can, but the system is clearly defective and Avis seems to have no interest in fixing it.

We normally use another rental company when flying into Tampa but used Avis this time to try it out and we will never use them again, I would pay double to avoid Avis. The car itself was fine but the customer service experience was awful. The man who checked us in was so rude to me and my partner. First of all he would not look at me or acknowledge my presence until he asked for my credit card. When I said I would be the second driver, he looked at my partner and said "Who is she to you?". He then explained that if we were married the second driver would be free - but we had booked through Costco which always gets the second driver free, which he knew but decided to be a jerk. He gave us a hard time about every little thing in the check in. We always use our own insurance, and we have never been asked who the insurance company is, but he wanted all of the insurance information. It made the check in so long and unnecessarily stressful. He also demanded my credit card at the end of check in, which as the second driver I have never had to provide at any other rental company, and when I asked why he said "well in case you crash the car we'll know who to charge". I will say that we were able to easily extend our trip over the phone when our flight was canceled and drop off was very easy.

No issues at all, everything went exactly as booked. I requested a change of vehicle from the one initially assigned, and it was handled quickly and efficiently. The return process was smooth with no problems. Avis Preferred is always a nice feature and makes the experience even better.

I will not use Avis again. I booked them because they offered a fair price (not the absolute cheapest) with okay-ish reviews. I waited with frustration for over an hour in line to get my pre-confirmed, pre-paid vehicle. When it was finally my turn in line to speak to the customer service rep, he told me that the "vehicle class" I selected included electrical cars and if I didn't upgrade, I would have to get an electric vehicle. I went out of my way to avoid electrical cars when searching for my rental (and even looking back - the economy class is still advertised as gasoline). I did not want to argue with him because it was very late in the evening and there was still a long line behind me. I obliged with his offer of upgrading my vehicle for only $10 a day. When I got my final bill, I had been charged an extra $53 for my 3 day trip. I called customer service a few weeks later to explain my poor experience. I had to put up a bit of a fight to get a full refund (they tried to offer just 1/2 at first). Even tho, I did get a full refund and the customer service on the phone was good, I still would never rent from this location again.

As a 20 year loyal National renter, this was my first time renting with Avis and it was a horrible experience. I selected Avis due to pickup availability at the Marriott in Buckhead (Atlanta, GA). Upon arrival my choices were a disgusting Chevy Malibu or a car that “couldn’t go over 50mph”. The gentleman at the counter at the Marriott was very nice and personable, however this car was most definitely not inspected or cleaned. There was damage all over inside and out, which we noted on the form. After driving it, I found more damage (including writing all over the visor.) It was filthy outside and the interior was stained everywhere, but worse, after driving a mere 40 miles I noticed the gas was under a quarter tank, which tells me it wasn’t even filled when I picked it up. Furthermore, the PSI on a tire was low most of the less than two days I had the car, ranging from 23-28 psi, often dropping and then increasing again. It was such a pain. The whole car shook going more than 65mph. There was nobody at the car return at the airport, so I had to go inside to provide the receipt documenting the known damage and explain the remainder of the issues. She said she was trying to give me a discount.

I understand selection is limited at non-airport sites, but this car wasn’t fit to be given to a customer. Not only did I pay a hefty price, but I had to fill up the gas too. I’m incredibly dissatisfied with the entire process and now see multiple charges pending on my credit card too. I received four different email receipts for four different amounts- you will be hearing from me again if any or all those charges go through. Frankly, I believe this entire experience should be comped.

UPDATE- the charges have now gone through and are over $100 more than the quoted price. I have been trying to get this escalated with their customer service since Friday morning. I just continue to receive the generic “we’re sorry” reply. Now I’m no longer skeptical of this location, but of the customer service for the entire Avis corporation. This is unacceptable and I will be disputing this charge.

Arrived late at night and the staff expedited our check in processing. We were on the road in 15 minutes. The return process was even faster.

Wonderful experience renting from TPA airport, would like to commend one of the counter representatives Mr. Ahmed Mohamed for an awesome job and responsible for the 10 /5-star rating which came close to a 2-3 with just a little extra effort!

Avis Car rental at Tampa is the best. Honest location to rent, no greed. Do not rent at Nextcars, Fox, Priceless nor any other small player at this location, they will rip you off

The car that I had reserved was not available. Was given an Elantra. Too low to the ground, hard to get in an out of, fuel cost more because it was not a Prius..

i normally don’t write reviews but i would give this one negative 100 if it was available. Do NOT ever reserve a car at the tampa air port avis location. Their representatives are beyond offensive rude and unprofessional to say the least. The car we reserved two months ago was not available (or anything similar). When we expressed disappointment i over heard employee in photo below making fun of my husband saying “she sent him down to speak to manager but there is no manager…or cars available “ she didn’t realize i was w him and heard them laugh. i went up to the counter and asked for her name she relied “Nonia” as if she was in pre k …. i said “i don’t find it funny i have w small child exhausted and you send him there knowing he will get no help” for what reason other then being obnoxious. She proceeded to calling me names telling me if i don’t leave she will have us thrown out of the air port. Not sure on what grounds she showed poor judgment . I’m shocked she has a job and the that this is happening and gone unnoticed. I waited w my daughter for my husband to come back up when he did we walked up to him. Again i heard the rep in photo attached calling me derogatory names. i went up to stand up for myself and my family. i was approached by short spanish looking man (who also works there) who put his hands on my body telling me it is all ok go downstairs get a car …. nothing was ok especially his gross hands on me. (there was no car for us. )i politely asked him to keep his hands to himself and explained i find this place offensive. No one there seem to care about their job or customers service. We ended up taking the nicest car service driver take us home instead. We are getting luxury car from another location for a lot less. give yourself a favor and skip this one hour line (since that’s how long it takes them to process short line) . it’s complete incompetence with zero accountability…

Please use the other rental companies at tampa airport…..

we booked a reservation for the type of car we wanted to rent 2 months prior to our arrival. when we got to avis and spoke with their representative she said they don’t have a car to give us. this is when my patience was challenged and the representative went to another representative to see what can be done and all the other representative could respond in a very uncaring and disrespectful way… too bad for him there is no car for him. of which i had a few choice words for her as well as she did for me. so i asked to speak with a manager to which the rude representative said you will have to go downstairs and talk to one because they don’t come up here to help. as i was walking to go downstairs, my wife who was sitting with my 5 year old daughter and who this rude representative didn’t know was with me, responded with a snickering laugh, good luck to him there is no one down there that will help him.

while i was down there asking to speak to manager my wife called me to tell me what just happened. that has now got me to my point. i argued and argued with the person downstairs how there needs to be some accountability on their end for leaving us with no car, which i apologized for the anger. there were a few other people downstairs with similar issues that had been waiting over an hour to get there reserved car. miraculously after 40 minutes they came up with a car from the class we reserved.

went upstairs to get my bags and stopped by to tell the rude attendant she wasn’t as clever as she thought she was when she made her previous remarks which ensued to us both having choice words for each other. another attendant finally intervened to said let it go you won….. what do you mean i won? i made a reservation of which i should be entitled to and at the very least not have been disrespected by a representative.

well i guess this rude representative wanted to now have a power struggle and call the lady downstairs i talked to and told her to take back the car that they gave me, of which she followed her rude associates instructions. leaving me, my wife, and 5 year old child stranded at 12:30 am with no car to get home. luckily we were able to find a taxi.

overall the company has countless complaints from all sorts of issues. if i can leave anyone with free advice i would use one of the other rental companies.
