In the quiet suburbs of Wheeling, Illinois, Vasilki (named after the vibrant blue cornflower of the Belarusian fields) stands as a rare and soulful gateway to Eastern Europe. Located at 250 McHenry Rd, this isn't just a restaurant; it is a warm, wooden-clad portal to a culture where hospitality is measured in the depth of a soup bowl and the crispness of a potato pancake.
Here is why Vasilki is a "hidden gem" worth the journey:
The Atmosphere: An Old-World Village Tavern
Step through the doors and the strip-mall exterior vanishes, replaced by a rustic, folk-inspired interior that feels like a cozy farmhouse in the Minsk countryside.
The Woodwork: The heavy timber beams, traditional Belarusian embroidery (rushnyks), and hand-painted floral motifs create an environment that is intimate, nostalgic, and incredibly "Instagrammable" in an authentic, non-manufactured way.
The Soundtrack: Soft Slavic melodies often drift through the air, making it the perfect sanctuary for a long, slow dinner away from the frantic pace of Chicagoland.
The Culinary Soul: The "Kingdom of the Potato"
Belarusian cuisine is the ultimate comfort food, and Vasilki is its premier embassy. If you think you know potatoes, prepare to be humbled:
The Legendary Draniki: These aren't just potato pancakes; they are a national obsession. At Vasilki, they are served golden-brown and crisp, often stuffed with savory meats or topped with thick, luscious sour cream and mushroom gravy.
Machanka: A deep, traditional stew of pork and sausages served with a side of thick crepes (blini)—the ultimate "stick-to-your-ribs" Belarusian experience.
The Beetroot Heritage: From vibrant, ruby-red Borscht to the delicate Herring Under a Fur Coat salad, the flavors are earthy, fermented, and expertly balanced.
Why It’s a Unique Chicagoland Destination
"Vasilki is where the 'Old Country' meets the North Shore. It’s a place where the portions are generous, the sour cream is plentiful, and every meal feels like a Sunday dinner at a grandmother’s house you never knew you had."
Cultural Rarity: Belarusian-specific restaurants are a rarity in the U.S. Vasilki offers a distinct culinary identity that sits comfortably between Polish and Russian traditions while maintaining its own unique "forest and field" character.
The Infusions: Keep an eye out for their traditional drinks, including Kvas (a fermented rye bread drink) or their selection of honey-infused spirits that provide the perfect "kick" to a cold Illinois evening.
Exceptional Catering: They are famous locally for turning simple gatherings into "Slavic feasts," with platters of smoked meats and handmade dumplings (pelmeni) that defy expectations.
The Insider Tip
If you are new to the menu, order the "Draniki with Chanterelles." The earthiness of the wild mushrooms paired with the crunch of the potato is the definitive taste of Belarus.

- Great place for brunch. Food was great. I will definitely go back
- Food overall was great! Just about what you expect from it to be :)
Service was slow, which is no big deal when there is just one person working. So I’d keep that in mind. The atmosphere could be a dash better. They got a large tv and sometimes play music. Sometimes it just stops and it gets overly quiet. Would be nice just to have a relaxing or festive ambiance going so it doesn’t feel odd.
- That's great! The place is beautiful, food is good, the staff are friendly and professional.
- Absolutely delicious Slavic food. The stroganoff is utter perfection. They have a good selection of wine and kotlets on the menu as well. The employees do not speak much English, but I was able to use a translator app to tell the waitress how delicious the food was and to ask for my check. The employees serve you with kidness and candor, and the food tastes like it was made with a lot of love. This is a wonderful little spot, and you should absolutely visit to taste the food.
- Came here for a birthday dinner. Most of the food was bland and greasy. Most of the fillings were mushroom and meat, and so everything tasted very similar. It was not good
