If you’re living in the Loop, South Loop, or Lakeshore East and need a spot that makes a quick errand feel a lot cooler than a typical supermarket run, the Target at 1 S State St is a total city legend. Located in the historic Sullivan Center (the old Carson Pirie Scott building) right at the "World’s Busiest Corner" of State and Madison, this store is the go-to for anyone in the 60603 zip code. It’s famously known as the "Goth Target" thanks to its stunning, dark ornate ironwork and the slightly moody, high-fashion vibe of the entrance—making it probably the only place where you’ll feel underdressed while buying paper towels.
The real benefit of this State Street location is how perfectly it fits the lifestyle of a downtown resident or a busy commuter. It’s a multi-level "City Target," meaning it’s specifically curated with the stuff people living in high-rises actually need. You’ve got a solid grocery section for fresh food and a fully stocked CVS Pharmacy for prescriptions. Plus, it features a Starbucks Cafe and an Ulta Beauty section, so you can grab a latte and your favorite skincare products without having to navigate five different stores during your lunch break.
What really distinguishes this spot is the incredible architecture. Shopping here feels like a bit of a history lesson; the building was designed by the legendary Louis Sullivan, and Target did an amazing job preserving the original white columns and massive "Chicago windows" that let in a ton of natural light. If you have a few extra minutes, head to the rotunda on the second floor to check out the placards explaining the history of the building. It’s a weirdly beautiful experience to stand in a landmark while picking out a new set of throw pillows.
Since this is the heart of the Loop, it's incredibly easy to get to by CTA—pretty much every train line lets out within a block or two. They keep a reliable schedule that’s great for grabbing essentials before your morning meeting or swinging by before heading to the train. Target on State St is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and Saturday through Sunday from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. It’s easily the most unique Target in the city and a reliable favorite for keeping your life running in the middle of all the downtown hustle.

- I shop here often and it’s always exactly what I need. This last time, I had an issue with the self checkout that was totally my fault, but the employee working was so incredibly helpful and kind. She was managing so much going on and was doing better than anyone could ever expect. I had to ask her name because she’s such an asset to this store and I really hope some kind of management sees this and recognizes her outstanding customer service, professionalism, personability, etc.
- Store is always clean, employees are nice and helpful. Love this location
- They always have everything you need food fresh and beautiful downtown location
- Came from the west suburbs to pick up an item on a Saturday afternoon and they were closed! They had signs up on the windows saying “sorry for the inconvenience, we’re closed” such a waste of time
- So good! I extremely recommend it! I had the best experience:)
- I’m a frequent shopper at this store and long story short the customer service that I received from one employee by the name of Andrik was very bitter sweet he was very rude and unprofessional.. I’ve never had this experience and it’s sad to say that I’ve experienced it this time.. Target you just hire anybody these days it use to be more customer friendly people now your hiring Crab Apples name Andrik how sad for your consumers..
- I’d rather shop @ target . Health is wealth and target has so many products for your physical well being
- Bad experience . They followed me around the store ( i have never stolen from target in my life time) . Plus stood in line behind me and I spent almost 400$ in target .. never will shop at this target again. Because am African American don't mean am a theft....
- We came from out of town, so this place was very different from what we see as a traditional target. I would say it’s the neighborhood market of targets. They had no kid items and no cold weather items. When we asked employees where things were, they seem very put out to help. This place was very bare bones.
