If you’re looking for a taste of something truly different in the Phoenix desert, you’ve got to check out Samarkand Restaurant Glatt Kosher at 7823 N 19th Dr. For those of us in the local community, this isn’t just another restaurant—it’s the go-to spot for authentic Bukharian and Uzbek cuisine. It’s tucked away in a quiet spot off 19th Avenue, and while the exterior is modest, the food coming out of that kitchen is packed with the kind of bold, home-cooked flavors you usually only find in Central Asia or Israel.

The real standout here is the traditional Uzbek comfort food. If you’ve never had Plov (also called Osh Plov), you’re missing out—it’s a rich, slow-cooked rice dish with tender lamb and carrots that’s basically a hug in a bowl. Their shish kababs are another huge hit; they’re seasoned perfectly and grilled over an open flame so the meat stays juicy with just the right amount of char. For the full experience, you have to try the Lagman soup or the Manti (handmade meat dumplings)—they taste exactly like something a grandmother spent all day prepping by hand.

What makes Samarkand special for the Phoenix community is that it’s Glatt Kosher, providing a reliable and delicious option for those who keep a strict kosher diet but are tired of the usual deli or pizza spots. It’s a family-run business, and you can really feel that in the service. Whether you’re a regular or it’s your first time trying Bukharian food, they’re usually happy to explain the menu and make sure you’re getting exactly what you’re craving. It’s the kind of place where the quality of the ingredients and the tradition behind the recipes take center stage.

Keep in mind that while they’ve traditionally offered a cozy space to sit, many locals now use them as their primary takeout and catering hub. They are absolute lifesavers when it comes to planning a Shabbat dinner or a holiday event; their large catering platters of grilled meats and specialty rice can feed a whole crowd without you having to lift a finger. It’s a true hidden gem that brings a unique, spicy, and savory cultural flair to the Valley of the Sun.

Came in here and it was a mess. No one really wanted to help me and tables weren't set up at all. They didn't really want to service me and told me that they only do catering even though it's clear they have a normal menu as if they were a sit down restaurant. Extremely shady place.
